Kavieng Itineraries:
These would include two days of diving Walindi Reefs in Kimbe Bay, north west New
Britain Island, three days diving around the Fathers Reefs area farther east of north New Britain Island and then
four days of diving in the Kavieng area which is located off of New Ireland Island. Two overnight cruises would
be included; directly between Kimbe Bay and Fathers Reefs, then from Fathers Reefs to Kavieng. The actual length
of stay in each area will be subject to weather and water conditions at the discretion of the Captain.
- Walindi diving is protected, with numerous
and diverse species of spectacular corals, reef fishes and invertebrates, including many which are rare or even
yet unidentified.
- Fathers Reefs diving has striking reef
and coral formations, many reef fish species including pelagics and lots of invertebrate life.
- Kavieng is less protected with generally
stronger currents, specializing in pelagic fish such as various shark species and rays.
Walindi/Tufi Itineraries:
Conducted in January, February and March of 1998, these itineraries will take divers
from the Bismarck Sea all the way around the tip of West New Britain Island south into the Coral Sea where they
will experience pristine diving around the Dampier Straits, Arawe Islands, D’Entrecasteaux Reefs and end up in
the mainland town of Tufi. Return itineraries will be in the reverse order. While these 12 night itineraries are
primarily exploratory and involve several long overnight steams from one area to another, the length of stay in
each area will be weather dependent and at the Captain’s discretion.
- Walindi diving is protected, with numerous
and diverse species of spectacular corals, reef fishes and invertebrates, including many which are rare or even
yet unidentified.
- Witu Islands are an island group surrounded
by a large number of sea mounts and walls with an abundance of extraordinary marine life. Shore excursions may
be possible from time to time.
- Arawe Islands are on the south side of
New Britain Islands and an excellent haven in the event of monsoon winds blowing out the diving on the north side.
Expect virgin diving and many species of reef fish.
- D’Entrecasteaux Reefs (south of the Trobriands)
are virtually unexplored and this is where you will experience the most pristine diving adventure. New dive sites
are waiting to be found and named.
- Tufi Reefs are renown for great pelagic
encounters, similar to Kavieng, with fairly strong currents constantly flushing the reefs with nutrients. Several
species of sharks may be seen on a single dive.
